Hello Vikings, this is the Norse Code’s third edition of Feature Friday. Every Friday, we shine the spotlight on a New Berlin West student, faculty member, club, or event.
This week, we took a deep dive into the Salsa competition held by El Sol, NBW’s Spanish Honor Society. 12 NBW salsa assemblers crafted their best salsa with hopes of winning first place and receiving $50. El Sol and Academic Decathalon advisor, Srta. Thompson established the contest last year to fundraise for El Sol member scholarships. For $2, anyone could taste all the salsas with complimentary tortilla chips and vote on their favorites. In the 2022 contest, Counselor Mrs. Houston came out victorious. However, she did not re-enter this year. Srta. says the key to delicious salsa is “Finding the right mix of fresh ingredients and spices.”
The winners of the 2023 El Sol Salsa contest were juniors Elena Cardenas and Aarya Patel with Salsa #4: Sublime Tomato Lime Salsa. Cardenas has been around Salsa all of her life as her Dad often makes salsa and her Grandfather has his own signature salsa. She added ingredients that she thought would be good in Salsa such as chili flakes and lime. She was very surprised when she won because this was the first time she made salsa for someone else. As for the prize money, she plans to spend it on gas money. Despite the rumors amongst the NBW student body that the salsa was store-bought, Cardenas said, “I made it on Tuesday night because I forgot about the contest.” Thompson thanks everyone for participating in the Contest and donating to a good cause.
