Vikings dig for the win
West defeats Brown Deer in four games.
Tuesday, September 30th, the Vikings swept away another victory against Brown Deer, winning three of the four games played. The first set ended in a decisive win for the Vikings, a score of 25-16. Keeping the same intensity, the second game followed the last with a 25-17 win over the Falcons.
In the third set, the Vikings slipped with a low energy game, losing in a challenging duel 20-25. West pushed hard to try to recover from the early shortfall, but they were unable to recover it.
“We got too excited and made poor decisions,” senior captain Rayce Albino stated after the game. “We just didn’t make smart plays.”
Head Coach Courtney Wiegel stated the Monday before the game, “I’m looking to my captains to step up as leaders.”
Going in to the 4th game, Captains Albino and Jamey Devine did just that. Leading the pack to fight back from the loss, the girls got their winning streak back alive.
“In the 4th game we realized we needed to finish and began playing smarter.” Albino said. “We got passes up, good sets, and great swings.”
They finished off the match with the most decisive score of the match: 25-11.
Claire Radtke and Ruwandi Wijenayake led the pack with 10 kills each, along with Rachel Novotny, Rayce Albino, and Nichole Phillips leading in aces, 3 apiece. Elise Arnas led in blocks with 9, and Molly Austad in digs with 18.
The Vikings pulled out of a rough first half of the season to capture the win for West, much to the delight of the community. Playing top ranked teams from the conference, the pressure of the games set them up for success by giving them the drive to pull through the 3rd game. The Vikings continue to trudge on, looking forward to a prosperous second half of the season.
