Starting the season off right

New Berlin West had a strong showing at the track meet. Both the girls and boys varsity took second in the meet.

The New Berlin West varsity and junior varsity track team competed at an annual indoor meet that was hosted at West on Wednesday March 19th 2014. The meet took place in the Field house. Once all teams were warmed up and ready to begin, field events started promptly at 4 pm. running events followed beginning at 4:30 pm.

In individual events, the girl’s varsity team scored well in field events. Gina Pezze (senior) took home a first place throw in the Shot Put. Following close behind was Junior Patricia Boles placing second. Also, coming in fifth was Rebecca Damitz (junior) from New Berlin West. Juniors Cassie Kloth, Gabby Torres, and Allie Thomas all placed in the top five in the Triple Jump, helping rack up points for their team. Former State champion in the Pole Vault, Rayce Albino (Junior), took first at the meet clearing 11 feet even. Also, sophomore Ariana Gladieux-Carter placed second easily clearing a height of six feet.

The girl’s varsity also scored well in running events. In hurdles, Sophomore Liz Doty, Ariana Gladieux-Carter, and Tiara Perkins placed in the top five. Senior Marissa Myers placed first in the 55 meter dash. Junior Rayce Albino was close behind finishing third. Jamey Devine (Junior) led the distance team finishing third in the 1600 meter run and placing fourth in the 800 meter run. Distance runner Allie Maniscalco (Freshman) placed second in the 3200 meter run.

The New Berlin West boys varsity team also competed strong and finished leaving impressive marks. Starting with field events, Senior Lukas Lauer finished fourth in the Shot Put. Following close behind was Junior Alex Rodriguez finishing fifth. Sophomore Chase Kelly finished fifth in the Pole Vault. The boys also dominated the high jump. Mitchell Hewitt, Mitch Baker, and Henry Adkison all cleared 5 feet easily, ranking them as the top three finishers.

The boys scored respectably in running events as well. Starting with the 4×800 meter run, New Berlin West placed first with a team finishing time of 9:07.51. Senior Dylan Wiese helped his team to victory by placing second in the 55 meter hurdles. The senior finished with a time of 8.52. Just milliseconds behind two New Berlin Eisenhower athletes, Senior Nate Latus took third place in the 55 meter dash. Finishing off the night, Junior Grant Marton won the 800 meter run with a time of 2:12.00. Finishing close behind Senior Dominick Ropella was runner up finishing with a time of 2:17.43.

Overall the meet was a success for all New Berlin West athletes. The Girls varsity team took home a second place finish, and the junior varsity took home a first place finish. The boys also put forth great effort and captured a victory well deserved. The varsity and Junior varsity teams both took second place.
